Christian Nationalists aren't Christians, they are Hellions

Many of us grew up familiar with the saying, "ignorance is bliss," and the older I get and the more that I see how many of my fellow Americans seem ecstatic over the almost daily cruel, insensitive, and class condescending executive and legislative acts hailing forth from the Trump administration and his MAGA Republican Congress, I can't help but to conclude that the many millions of lower economic class folks who are cheering on this foolishness are the happiest people alive because their ignorance is leading to their own demises—and they don't even care to realize it!

Yes, I know that I have been down this road before in this column space, often referring to Trump's loyal uneducated followers "the Great Unwashed" and the "Modern Day Know Nothings" to tie the past to the present!

But what really irks me these days is whenever Trump and his minions are referred to as "White Christian Nationalists"in the mainstream media because at the end of the day, they do not qualify to be called "Christian”—and it's time for folks who are Christians to stop beating 'round the bushes and call them by their real names: Hellions!

If you grew up in Sunday School like I did, and can discern fact from fiction, then you know that from antiquity to this very hour, the folks who selfishly dabble(d) in evil "are of their Father, the Devil!" The precedent in my declaration comes from the red-letter words of Jesus Christ as inscribed in the Gospel of John, Chapter Eight verse 44: "You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

Amen!

Now, I know that some of my pastoral friends and loyal subscribers will say, "Hobbs, it's not for you to judge," and I respectfully counter by noting that it is not judgment to call something or someone by their correct names! If I go to a restaurant and want Veal Parmesan, I'm not going to look at the menu and point to the Grilled Sea Bass for the waiter! Similarly, I'm not going to look at Hellions from ages past, or Hellions from the present age, and call them Christians when, in fact, they are Hellions!

Let's be clear, Hellions raising Hell in the name of Jesus Christ are nothing new; even a basic look at world history since the First Century A.D. allows us to pick a misery, any misery, and somewhere, someone or some group calling themselves "Christians" were THE primary problem—or among the goons spreading dissent, disease, and destruction wherever they trod!

In the last 1000 years alone, from the "Crusades" in the Holy Land, to European colonial exploitation of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, so-called Christians were THE main source of misery for the local populations!

When we consider the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the millions of Africans who died en route to the Americas, or "Manifest Destiny" and the millions of Indigenous people and Africans who were killed by conquest or consequences of disease and Jim Crow laws, their European descended conquerors, owners, and killers typically called themselves Christians!

Lest we forget that the two World Wars in the 20th Century, and a Holocaust that killed 10 million Jews and Gypsies during the Second, when we look at the causes of those global genocidal events, the underlying root of the problem was, once again, so-called Christians, whether they called themselves Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, or Lutherans! Indeed, the leaders and followers of European colonial and post-colonial nationalist dogma ALL believed that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were the authors of their objectively evil aims of conquest or maintaining global white supremacist hegemony by any then legal or wicked means necessary!

In 2025, the same holds true this Sunday morning as President Donald Trump, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and legions of the merry minstrels of Mephistopheles are all patting themselves on the back because the House of Representatives passed legislation that Trump refers to as the "Big Beautiful Bill." This Bill is a core piece of Trump's MAGA domestic agenda that, if passed by the Senate and signed into law, will extend his 2017 tax cuts to the wealthy, raise the debt ceiling, push the economy even closer to recession—all the while gutting social safety nets like Medicaid and SNAP that provide medical coverage and nutrition for the poorest Americans.

And make no mistake about it, just as farmers in the so-called "Heartland" voted overwhelmingly for Trump, only to find that their farm productions and profits are in peril due to Trump's economically stupid tariffs, many of these same MAGAs who cheered Trump on due to their shared racism, sexism, homophobia, and religious bigotry are finding themselves still struggling to make ends meet—and will struggle even more once they and their loved ones can't get medical treatment or subsistence due to their beloved leader's Big Beautiful Bill!

And what these MAGA Hellions have in common is that to let them tell it, they are Christians! But they are not, when considering that the Gospel of Matthew quotes Jesus as saying (in bold italics):

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink…

With the price of food still sky high despite Trump's promise to address it on day one, it's clear that the MAGA Hellions couldn't care less about what most of us eat or drink! But sadly, there are many MAGA hat wearers who are going to struggle right along with the liberals they are laughing at when they see their own Food Stamps dry up!

MAGA Hellions overwhelmingly support rounding up illegal immigrants and deporting them, even when it breaks up families because children of illegals born in America are birthright citizens per the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution!

Good luck, MAGA Hellions, once those Medicaid benefits dwindle today—and Medicare gets attacked tomorrow—in your sinister leader’s never ending quest to gut the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare!

“I was in prison and you came to visit me...

Well, not with ICE agents snatching immigrants, citizens, and even Members of Congress off of the streets and deporting them to God knows where—or jailing them right here in the States—often without due process of law for the former, and clearly with the intent to stymie congressional job dictates for the latter!

So yes, I am comfortable in my assertions that those who support Trump and his MAGA agenda are Hellions, and I remind of this appellation not to pile on, but to prepare my readers for the reality that the 2026 election season is a little over six months away, and that now is the time to organize and unite in an effort to break the Republican control of Congress in order to make Trump the lamest of lame ducks for his last two years in office! And part of that preparation must include calling his Project 2025 agenda what it is—the latest iteration of “Satanic Verses”—doctrines spread by a deplorable and petty little man who clearly was not ordained by the same God that most real Christians worship and serve!
