"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" is a nod to the Trojan War when according to Homer, the Greek Army, after its unsuccessful attempts to breach the fortified walls of its rival city-state Troy, erected a massive wooden horse. The Trojans, believing it to be a gift from the gods, pulled the horse into the gates, after which the Greek Army emerged from the structure and sacked the entire city.
Today, Florida A&M University alumni and supporters must "beware of MAGA conservatives bearing gifts" in the presidential search, namely the fact that of the four finalists for the job, Attorney Marva Johnson, the preferred candidate for MAGA per multiple well placed sources, is the one who is the least qualified to lead the nation's #1 ranked public HBCU.
Attorney Marva Johnson, FAMU presidential candidate
You see, the easiest way to dilute or destroy an institution with a legacy of producing graduates that led the fight for Black civil rights and equal opportunity for all in Florida—particularly in an age when MAGA Gov. Ron Desantis and his legislative cronies are attacking those very rights and opportunities each and every day in their so called "Anti-Woke" agenda—is to plant one of their own right in the driver's seat to eventually do their bidding.
And what is the MAGA bidding? It's pretty simple and includes ending affirmative action and DEI; eliminating Black studies, women's studies, and suppressing Black history curricula—all the while ending commissions that seek to ameliorate the economic and social standing of Blacks and other minority racial communities!
With such attacks being a key part in Ron Desantis’s administration, one need not be an award winning political scientist to realize that just like old school racists in the legislature tried to kill FAMU by underfunding some programs or moving others, like the original FAMU College of Law, over to Florida State University, how long before FAMU’s Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health programs are moved by new school racists to enhance a growing Florida State University College of Medicine—one that's currently trying to acquire the vast Tallahassee Memorial Hospital network?

As such, the era of thinking, "well, a connected Black Republican FAMU President would be great to help secure funding" no longer exists; these MAGAs are not even pretending to care about Black people, Black thought, or the very basic humanitarian ideals that have sustained FAMU since its founding in 1887! To that end, I do NOT think it hyperbole to submit that if we don't mobilize, educate, and agitate those who are erecting a figurative wooden rattle snake to leave in the university quadrangle, FAMU, a school that has educated so many of our people (including dozens of my own family members and me), may no longer exist in its current form come 2027--or sooner!
Lest we forget...
As the educated, un-educated would say, "You Know What You Got, But You Don't Know What You Are Going To Get".
Keep it simple, Dr. Palm should due quite fine.
