The Army of Northern Virginia's commanding Gen. Robert E. Lee couldn't do it...
Gen. Lee's trusted infantry officer, Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, couldn't do it...
And Gen. Lee's feared cavalry officer, J.E.B. Stuart, couldn't do it either...
If you're a little rusty on your Civil War history, fret not because Hobbs the historian is here to remind you that during four bloody years of fighting, the South's most revered general officers NEVER breached the U.S. Capitol—or flew the Stars & Bars Confederate Battle Flag throughout the Capitol Complex in Washington, D.C!
But on January 6, 2021, Kevin Seefried of Delaware (above), accompanied by his son, Hunter, brandished the flag of rebellion at the Capitol—the very one that has, since the end of the Civil War, served as a racist relic used by the Ku Klux Klan and affiliated malcontented minstrels to deny the constitutional rights of Blacks and other demographic minorities.
Following a bench trial before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, both Kevin Seefried, 53, and Hunter Seefried, 24, were found guilty today of obstructing an official proceeding—a felony—and assorted misdemeanors, including disorderly conduct, and illegally entering a restricted area.
The Seefried's face up to 20 years each on the felony charges when they return for sentencing in September. While the likelihood of the pair spending two decades in prison is slim based upon prior adjudicated cases, in the federal system, a felony stays a felony, which means that they lose their rights to vote or bear arms unless they are pardoned some day down the line (which is practically impossible under President Joe Biden, being that he was the man they opposed, and whatnot)!
Separately, there's a twist of irony that the Seefried's fate was sealed by the testimony of Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, the Black man whose image went viral during the January 6th riots due to his clever maneuver to entice the Seefried's and fellow anarchists to follow him—which led the mob away from then Vice President Mike Pence and the Congressional members who were the target of the MAGA mob's ire.
The heroic Officer Eugene Goodman at the very moment he led the lions away from their prey…
Isn't it rich that Brother Goodman, a descendant of the enslaved, sealed the fates of the Seefried's, two men who live in Delaware—a former slave holding state that stayed loyal to the Union—but one that still had more than a few Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War (and to this very day)?
While there is a tad bit of humor to this story, there's also more than enough sadness when one realizes that the elder Seefried, at 53, was a high school senior back in the 80's during my own freshman year in high school in Florida. Meaning, he grew up in a world where Jim Crow was no longer the law of the land and, if he played any sports (or watched them) as a youth, he saw Black men and boys playing ball with white men and boys on every major network. Meaning, when the Gulf War was launched in 1991, he saw Black men and women serving alongside white, Latino, and Asian men and women in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Meaning, when the violence that erupted on 9/11 found Americans of all races killed in New York, D.C., and in Pennsylvania, surely he saw that skin color, religion, gender, or sexual orientation didn't matter to those foreign terrorists who struck our nation?
And yet, there was the elder Seefried last year, serving as a domestic terrorist—while waving that deplorable flag—with his 24-year-old son riding shotgun into infamy!
I honestly would love to sit and chat with the elder Seefried, a fellow Gen X'er, and inquire about what life was really like for him while growing up in the 80's? Surely, his behavior had to be learned somewhere; was it his parents? His church youth pastor? His scout leader? A coach?
Seriously, who or what poured such hatred into a man who is still a part of the most dominant and privileged group in the world—white males? I mean, the reason why Seefried became a mediocre malevolent MF must be analyzed in hopes that we, the people, can identify the triggers that send some to the extremes that we saw on January 6th—or sets them on the path of mass murder across our land.
Lest we forget...
Thankfully those Neanderthals are getting arrested and jailed. H/e we cannot allow those MAGATs to get elected to positions where they control the outcome of our elections…
Thanks very much for historical reminders and for some of us, why are we willing to forget and assimilate?
