“A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That is why I read so much…”Tyrion Lannister, George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire)
In these anti-intellectual times, I encourage all of my friends and followers to read! Read daily! Read books, read online articles, read print articles, but whatever you do—READ!—and push back against the culture of ignorance that threatens our modern world!
Each day, I make sure to take a few moments to read news reports from the BBC, Al-Jazeera, AP news wire, and Politico, while each week, I make sure to read the musings of my fellow Substack writers Heather Cox Richardson, Robert Reich, the great Dan Rather, and Christopher Jones for further perspective!
Recent books/essays that I've read (or re-read) to sharpen my mind while dealing with the shadow of autocracy that's rapidly descending upon America include:
The Message by Ta-Nahesi Coates
Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau
Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois
Which news sites or books are you reading to stay informed and upbeat? Feel free to drop a comment or send me an email so that I can add them to my intellectual arsenal!
Happy Sunday —and have a great week!
I signed up for The Atlantic this week! After the bravery and moxy of Jeffery Goldberg this week I thought i should honor his work. I took a screenshot of the books you mentioned to add to my TBR list. Have you ever read now Gov. Wes Moore's book "The Other Wes Moore"? I read it in 2010, when I was still working for the Boys & Girls Clubs of NW Indiana and loved it SO much I suggested it to my boss, the CEO, for our managers, club directors, and staff that facilitated a male mentoring program in our clubs.
@ Mr. Hobbs, I guess I’ll stop forwarding so many of my favorite reads to you since you’re ALREADY a fan of many of my favorites writers ✍🏽 and writings!! 😆😂🤩😊👍🏽
