I STRONGLY urge my readers and followers to watch "Rustin" on Netflix during this Thanksgiving week.
Because this is a historical biopic, there really aren't "spoilers" because the film is based on actual events in the life of the defiantly Black, openly gay architect of many of the civil rights battles of the 1950’s and 60’s which led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Voting Rights Act of 1965, and Fair Housing Act of 1968.
The real Rustin (l) and King circa 1962
While the screenwriters and director nailed the feel of the Movement with uncanny accuracy, my only complaint is that I would have LOVED to have seen a scene depicting how far the Kennedy Brothers, as in President John and Attorney General Bobby, and their FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, went to undermine the relationship between Bayard Rustin and Dr. Martin Luther King during the Movement. Otherwise, this movie was a towering home run and a most worthy watch this holiday season!
Last, the movie features an all star cast including Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, Glynn Turman as legendary civil rights leader A. Phillip Randolph, Chris Rock as longtime NAACP head Roy Wilkins, and Jeffery Wright as the mercurial Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. In fact, I would not be shocked to see Domingo (Rustin) nominated for Best Actor, and the scene stealing Wright (Powell) as Best Supporting actor when awards season comes 'round!
Rustin was a Quaker too, am i right?
The movie was excellent. I would have loved to see some of Bayard Rustin’s steps after the March on Washington.
