Congratulations to my friend Charlie Ward on being named the new head basketball coach at Florida A&M University!
A FAMU legacy—Ward's father, Charlie Sr., won two Black College National Championships while playing football for legendary Coach Jake Gaither from 1959-63—Ward's own legendary career includes winning the 1993 Heisman Trophy as the quarterback for Florida State University, where he also led the Seminoles basketball team to Sweet 16 and Elite Eight appearances in the early 90's.
Mr. Charlie Ward, Sr was a teammate of my father's from 1959-62 at Florida A&M!
Ward was selected in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks and since his playing days finished, has held several football and basketball coaching positions, most recently at perennial playoff contender Florida High School in Tallahassee.
Ward after lunch with my friend/Frat Brother Kenneth Taite, owner of Haggai Construction, and me several years ago…
While we are close in age, I've always looked up to Ward due to his faith, character, and commitment to building strong communities. Thus, I am extremely confident that he will have a successful tenure leading the FAMU Rattlers basketball team in the future!
Spot on brother Ward and welcome aboard. I remember the should have been national championship team you were on at FSU however but………………PAT???
This is phenomenal news!
