As someone who has been a nontraditional candidate multiple times, I can say that it is imperative that you be prepared to answer all questions but especially the easily foreseeable ones.

As a proud alumna of Spelman College married to a rattler, I stand with FAMU and rattler nation. And while I wish that there was a woman in the mix besides Marva, I pray that she not be appointed.
It seems that the WannaBeDictatorJr is hellbent on making the state as dumb as he is. What’s even more appalling is that there are those who feel this last minute addition is a good one. On what planet? That’s the same as rolling into the Super Bowl with a starting QB that didn’t make the varsity at the junior high level, never played high school or college but is being called to play a perfect game. Anyone who signed off on this needs to have their heads examined. The Albany State Golden Ram in me is outraged! They tried to pull a fast one on us during our presidential search but we stood strong. ALL HBCU alums need to sign that petition! FAMU is the test case and others are watching.
Having gone through the same BS process at UF with DeSantis's hand picked candidate Ben Sasse, I can relate to the outrage I expect the people who truly care about FAMU are feeling at the moment. I hope it helps you all to know that we see what is going on and hope your outcome is better than what happened at UF.
Ms. Johnson’s selection today doesn’t bode well either for FAMU or for HBCUs as a whole. If HBCUs don’t remain “woke” and “progressive”, they’ll cease having a purpose in the Black community or in the nation as a whole. They’ll simply become redundant, and also easy(-ier) targets for merger or closure.
This is the canary in the coal mine for those of us who care about HBCUs and who also understand the value of an HBCU education beyond mere academics and career training. We should know that HBCUs remain especially vulnerable in the red states where most reside. Ms. Johnson is a Trojan Negro, a MAGA test case for their goal to either defang or to close HBCUs.
The 2020 “summer of love” (for Black people) is long over. Liberal whites have taken their ball and gone home. The big funding announcements have lessened to a drip. We cannot continue to be reactive.
On a related note, as excited as I was to hear about this week’s appointment of my friend and 1992 Morehouse classmate, Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, to the college presidency, I still believe the AUC schools need to either merge, or die. All are vulnerable and none are immune. Dr. Thomas, our outgoing president, mentioned that Morehouse could survive less than 2 years without needed federal funding. Even after raising over $330M over the last several years, we are less than 2 years away from darkness. That is a sobering thought.
There is strength and safety in numbers. It’s time to get past ego. We have far too many struggling HBCUs sitting across the street or across town from each other. It no longer serves us.
Chuck, MAGA Marva is obviously FAMU’s Ben Sasse-equivalent candidate. I hope and pray she isn’t forced and foisted upon your school the way he was on mine. It’s going to take us years to recover from his one year debacle.
